One of the most feared defensive players to ever touch the gridiron hails from the great State of Florida! So feared, they nicknamed Jones the "Secretary of Defense"
So GREAT that the statistical term "sack" was coined by the great "Deacon" Jones!
A rare blend of size, speed, and athleticism, Jones hails as of the old school legends to come from the ranks of a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). At a time where segregation was in effect
Jones started his journey in Eatonville, FL. Eatonville is the second oldest incorporated historically black city in the state of Florida. "Deacon" played for Hungerford Vocational, a segregrated historically black high school in the days of pre-intregration where the racial divide mandate separate schools for each race.
Jones was overlooked... but as they say, if you can play, they will find you.... And they did.. And the rest is history.
A 14th round draft pick when the NFL had rounds, the 186th overall pick would go to become the elite defensive player in the NFL, becoming one of only players in NFL history to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons (1967, 1968).
