When practice started Tuesday, Dolphins running back Kory Sheets was no longer around, having relinquished his No. 23 jersey after the team’s decision to release him. In a matter of minutes, that very jersey was back in use.

And although former Pro Bowl running back Larry Johnson is now wearing it — signed to a one-year, low-risk contract — the Dolphins were careful about separating Johnson’s well-known past from his place as just a guy in that Miami jersey.

“As I told Larry, I’m not asking him to be anything more than he is right now,” coach Tony Sparano said Tuesday. “I’m not asking him to be the man. I just want him to come in and be a piece on this football team.

“That’s it.”
